GABRIELA MISTRAL

Escritora y premio Nobel de Literatura en 1945

Gabriela Mistral, seudónimo de Lucila Godoy Alcayaga​, fue poeta, diplomática, pedagoga y primera ganadora latinoamericana de un Premio Nobel de Literatura.

Existe desde 1997 en Chile la Orden al Mérito Docente y Cultural Gabriela Mistral, así como también su imagen figura en un billete. «Desolación», «Besos», «Caricia», «Canción amarga», «Piececitos» y «Dame la mano» son algunas de sus obras fundamentales.

BIOGRAFÍA

Nació en Vicuña, Chile, 7 de abril de 1889 en una familia de origen

modesto. Su verdadero nombre es Lucila de María  Godoy Alcayaga. Sus padres eran Juan Jerónimo Godoy Villanueva, y una modista, Petronila Alcayaga Rojas.

En 1904, a los 15 años de edad ya había sido nombrada ayudante en la Escuela de La Compañía Baja.

En 1908 se desempeñó como maestra en la localidad de La Cantera.

En 1910 se trasladó a Santiago, donde trabajó en la Escuela de Barranca y aprobó los exámenes especiales en la Escuela Normal de Preceptores. A partir de ese momento empezó a trabajar en distintas escuelas alrededor del país.

En 1914, recibió el Primer Premio en el Concurso Nacional de Literatura «Juegos Florales» en Santiago, por «Sonetos de la Muerte». Fue en este concurso donde comenzó a utilizar el seudónimo de Gabriela Mistral.

En 1945 se convirtió en la primera latinoamericana en recibir el Primer Premio Nobel de Literatura, de manos del Rey Gustavo V, de Suecia.

En 1947 le fue concedido el Doctorado Honoris Causa del Mills Collage of Oakland, California.

En 1951, recibió el Premio Nacional de Literatura.

Se destacan entre sus obras: «Sonetos a la muerte» (1914), «Desolación» (1922), «Lecturas para mujeres» (1923), «Ternura» (1924), «Nubes blancas y Breve descripción de Chile» (1934). Dedicado a su madre, que había fallecido en 1929, escribió «Tala», en 1938. Le siguen «Antología» (1941), «Lagar», obra que escribe en 1954, inspirada en muchos poemas por los horrores de Segunda Guerra Mundial, «Recados contando a Chile» (1957), y «Poema de Chile» (1967), editado luego de su muerte.

En 1957, el cáncer puso fin a su vida, en Nueva York.
